July Mountain Bike Action has a stable platform comparison where
both bikes are rated. As I doubt anyone posting here has ever
seen a Spider, much less ridden one, that may be a good starting
point.

Yeah, the ragazines know it all and there is no bias even if the
bikes are advertised heavily in their rags. Get real.

SID as being a poor performer and lost Rockshox's advertising because
of it???
That's really funny, especially since the RockSux Sad has been well
known as a piece of **** for many years now. Big deal, some rag
*finally* admitted it and you were stupid enough to buy it to see that.

The Truth So, This is the real deal. I know some of the mags do that...
What I can tell you is BIKE mag DOES NOT! I know those guys and would
have thought that to be the standard. I think it reflects in the size of
the mag... some things do suck and are dumped on us as paying beta
testers. Slam em.

As for the Spyder, Jeff at Intense provided Spiders for us to race on in
a 24hr race. We raced for Shimano and did compairisons to our bikes
which were all current $5K + bikes. I am on my 44th mtn. bike and by far
this bike is the best to date! Easy setup and NO bob.

I ride a custom H.T. and cant wait till my Spider arives. As allways,
it's up to you - not worth going round and round about. this is the new
era. It is what is.

I got my wife a Blur and she loves it - both are killer bikes if you can
get one. As of this writing, both company's are super B/O on the VPP's.

That's 44 mountain bikes in how many years? Even assuming that "muontain
bikes" as such appeared in stores in the mid-seventies, they have only been
around for 28 years. That's over one-and-a-half bikes per year.
I doubt you had time to ride any of them sufficiently to really get to know
them well enough to feel that this is the best yet.
I could be wrong....... (and frequently am) .......but even given unlimited
funds that excessive consumption. ;-)

Steve- I don't even know why I would respond to this I worked in a
shop in 1980 - as well as many after that- We built our first MTB's out
of Schwinn 10 speed frames with a Campy frame bending tool. That was the
start. Rather than list every bike since then - I was a bike rep for
some time as well sports model that alone provided many bikes.

MTB's changed my life. I met my wife and had a kid due to these bikes -
I would have not been in Moab when she was if not to ride.

I am not bashing you, but if you road every day as I have for a long
time, you would understand that you can tell alot from a bike in not too
long a time.

The only reason I put how many bikes I've had was to give a reader some
background. If you knew me you would be super surprised to hear me make
a statment like I have about the Spider.

I do still work in the bike buss. However, we now produce many cycling
shows you see on TV.

I only made my post to relate my impression of the Spider.

Also FYI: MTB's were not in shops in the mid 70's

Those half bikes probably took twice as long to ride.

I know that _very_ well, I was just trying tot give you a few more years to
have accumulated bikes in. ;-)
I was riding knobbies on the dirt on a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed back in 1971/2 in
England. Believe me, if they had had anything in the shops that even looked
like that, I would have stolen one...

Which 24hr races where you riding the Spider in? I got to put my
fingers on a Spider for the first time at the 24hrs of Temecula and it
was the Shimano guys that had it. Pretty much sealed the deal for me
at that point. My LBS (supergo) was able to get my frame despite the
backorders in short order. I have had mine now for a month and love
it.

Be careful with the stand over height and length of the blur. I am 5' 10"
(175 cm) with a 31" (79 cm) inseame and can not fit on any of the Blurs.
The medium is way too short with a 15 cm stem and way too tall with a 100 mm
fork. The large is OK in length but even with a 63 mm fork I could not
stand over it. The small was so short it felt like a BMX bike, I would need
a 20 cm stem to feel even OK on it.
