Default San Francisco Drivers

I'm not sure what it is about San Francisco drivers. Although they drive like absolute assholes, they are very polite to bicyclists. I wonder if that is because the more bicyclists there are on the streets the less cars blocking their way or that maybe a large percentage either ride bikes themselves of have close relatives that do. Just 10 years ago, you could barely ride in San Francisco and yesterday during commute traffic cars would pass me up and pull over into my (car) lane, but they always gave me plenty of clearance. While around the rest of the bay area I could have been steaming from drivers even pulling into bike lanes if they could gain a car length, there was none of that in San Francisco and I was perfectly relaxed riding even on Embarcadero which has a bike lane but in other places you ALWAYS have to be alert for cars turning right directly in front of you with no room. There was none of that and if a car pulled to a stop to let me pass none of the cars behind him started honking as they would here or especially in the Silicon Valley/San Jose area.
