That's the accepted standard method. When I built and rode a
tandem regularly it seemed tedious. I made big holes in the
eccentric so any handy cylindrical thing could be used by
just turning the crank:

You are right. I found that also a much faster method. There is always a allen key that will fit in the existing hole but the damn BB can really be stuck.

Clear the bore and then polish your eccentric. Add your
favorite lubricant. Doesn't take long and avoids a very
frustrating adjustment.

I always used a pin-spanner on my tandem eccentric because it was the only part that required a pin spanner after about 1992, and I had to get some use out of my pin spanners. I think I have three or more -- including a Hozan (or some VAR knock-off) adjustable. They are now part of the great dust-collecting, historical tool collection. I recall using a pin spanner recently, but I can't remember what for. It was not for bicycle repair -- but now with Lou's tape-tip, it's a new dawn for at least one of the pin spanners..

I just had to buy what is essentially a pin spanner to loosen the lock nut on FSA cranks. Apparently there are several cranks that use that tool.
