Next you'll justify a long-travel FS MTB, maybe add a cruiser BMX "just for fun at the BMX track," and from there it's a short step to owning a fixed gear. -- Ryan Cousineau http://www.wiredcola.com/ "In other newsgroups, they killfile trolls." Next you'll justify a long-travel FS MTB, I live in Iowa, so my inexpensive 1999 Trek 6000 hardtail is adequate for anything I will likely encounter. Now an inexpensive aluminium alloy frame rigid MTB with fender and rack mounts would be tempting as a winter urban bicycle - however a CF from RANS could do the same with more comfort (and much more cost). maybe add a cruiser BMX "just for fun at the BMX track," Not at my level of bike handling skills. and from there it's a short step to owning a fixed gear. I would likely have Chalo level success riding a fixie, considering I insist on being clipped in before starting while riding stoker on a tandem. Now this may be in my futu http://www.greenspeed.com.au/Glyde.htm. -- Tom Sherman - 42.435731,-83.985007 I am a vehicular cyclist. |

Now this may be in my futu http://www.greenspeed.com.au/Glyde.htm. That would be recidivism. In all seriousness, and $9000 price tags aside, fully faired HPVs have been bubbling in my mind for a while, but I really keenly believe the sweet spot for this concept is electric-assist. First, if you're talking about a $9000 vehicle already, a few thousand dollars worth of electric drivetrain starts to look like a rounding error. Second, the joy of 30+ mph cruising speeds in these bikes on the flats must be painfully mitigated by the 4 mph climbing speeds on moderate hills. That's the place where using a bunch of electricity to turn you into Momentary Miguel Indurain would be a reasonable choice. The result would be somewhere in the territory of a scooter for raw speed and travel times, but using a happy mix of leg power and electricity. Of course, you know, scooters don't cost $9000, though. Not even electric ones. It's really -- Ryan Cousineau http://www.wiredcola.com/ "In other newsgroups, they killfile trolls." "In rec.bicycles.racing, we coach them." |
