Default I just rode the new GT iT1

While out riding today in Farmdale Park (near East Peoria IL) I came
across a group that had come over from Bloomington IL in search of some
terrain with hills (Bloomington is pretty flat). The owner of
Bloomington Cyling and Fitness was along with them and he had brought
one of the new GT Internal Transmission bikes (see the link at
http://www.gtbikes.com/mountain/cata...usa&brand=moun
for more technical info)

for a much better riding evaluation and video see
http://www.vorb.org.nz/article-23822.html

Anyway, they offered me the chance to jump on it and try it out - I only
got to ride it for a couple of minutes.

Impressions:
- WAY heavy - I guessed over 40lbs - it is actually 45
- Plush - it was set up for a rider about 80lbs lighter than me so there
was lots of sag when I sat on it, but compared to my Specialized Epic
Disc, this thing has tons of suspension travel (6-8 inches or so)
- Gearing - the transmission is unbelievable. You can shift into the
desired gear while stopped and the bike will be ready when you start to
pedal. It is a NEXUS hub mounted in the frame just above the BB.
Ratios aren't the same as on a normal MTB and the total gear range is
rather limited, but the shifts are INSTANT as well as quiet and you can
shift directly from lowest to highest ratio if you wish. Shifts under
pedal load were not a problem
Price - Ouch! $5G

Anyway, I was pretty impressed but glad I wasn't trying to hustle a 45lb
bike up the terrain in this area. The guy who was riding it admitted to
being a little bit whipped by the experience.

That ain't no XC bike, especially at 45 pounds and with a slack angle
like that.

Seems expensive when you consider a Nicolai with Rohloff isn't much
more. The nexus hub is pretty cheap isn't it?
