Park Tool Master Link Pliers for chains
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/M...x?ModelID=7781 Anyone bought one or used one? I'm thinking of getting one because the proprietary full enclosure chaincase on my Utopia has little space in the window on the chain it exposes for messing around, inevitably jerking the chain, perhaps hard enough to pull the chaincase apart. Reassembling the ultra-light chaincase with its multiple tiny bellows and then tying them on is a pain that I'd easily pay fifteen euro to avoid if the tool will work more certainly and gently than fingers. I wrecked two brand new Connex chains trying to get the quicklink off and then back on again. That soon gets expensive. Of course, I had no problem getting the quicklink off the old, worn chain... Any chance you can post a picture of this? How did you bend them? Stick each nose in a vice? -- Paul M. Hobson ..:change the f to ph to reply:. |

I bought one of those, it helps to squeeze the link (with fingers) while applying the tool. Wouldn't do without it now, though I still try to break the link with my fingers first, sometimes I do, and sometimes I don't. Owen |

In a similar vein, I took an old cheepie pair of pliers I found on a ride and ground the jaws down to a narrow profile with my bench grinder: http://tinyurl.com/dmswdj then used a round file to alter the jaws so they'd grip the link: http://tinyurl.com/cuspwx . Also works great. Then I figured out how to reliably unsnap the link by hand so I never use them anymore. Tom Young |

Previously, I had decent luck removing the links in most chains with my fingers but occasionally there was a stubborn one. With these, a quick squeeze and it is separated. Very handy to have around. I borrowed this tool a couple weeks ago after a fellow club rider heard my tale of being unable to open the link on my KMC chain and mentioned he had the unfamiliar product. Alas for me, when I used the tool I somehow managed to shear the pin from one half of the master link. Guess it was just a freak thing, but it forced me to purchase a replacement Connex link at about 20% of the cost of a new chain. So I now have a silver link in an otherwise gold chain. It certainly seems like a reaonable product, as these fancy links don't always open as readily as you'd think they would. Art |
