Choosing a BB

I am looking into a new BB. I am stuck between a three-piece and
sealed cartridge (i believe that is the term). How do they compare to
each other?

The BB will be put on a commuter fixie built from a Surly Cross-Check
that will see a fair share of abuse (some skid stopping and occasional
cross-race). I am looking to stay in the Dimension (QBP's house
brand*) price range.

*Has anyone else noticed that some Dimension brand products are
starting to become Surly brand? My friend bought the same hub as I
did about a year after me and while my hub has no markings on it, his
says "Surly".

What kind of crank? Regular square taper? A Shimano UN-73 in your
preferred size is about twenty bucks and as durable a part as you'll
ever find. I wouldn't try to save a couple bucks when I knew that a
tried and true classic was only a large fries away.

Go a sealed unit, it takes much less skill to install (grease the frame
threads!)and is effectively zero maintenance (Pull it out every 12 months
to renew the grease on the frame threads).

mostly in fair weather, won't the grease last a long time?

Do you do this routinely in other places on the bike such as pedal threads,
seat post, etc.?

Some people do. Others just wait until it can't be ignored. Suit your
personality.

I just put teflon tape on the threads and grease over it. The teflon tape
won't go anywhere and I've never heard anyone complain about a problem
caused by it.

Match the BB to the crank and get a cart bearing unit for your
commuter.

Grease can dry up and make bb removal or movement possible. Instead
of usual grease, use the stuff with silver metal in it. I think it's
called Permates. FSA also supplys a gold colored version.

Are you referring to anti-seize compound? _Permatex_ is one source of
a "silver" (aluminum particle) anti-seize compound
