e-RICHIE wrote: didn't columbus discovery america? Amerigo Vespucci FYI: Colombus discovered mailand America in his third voyage (1498). Of the 4 voyages of Amerigo Vespucci 1497-8, 1499, 1501, 1503 reported in "Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci" (1504 ) two have been proven to be fakes initially made up by some Italian author. Unfortunately this document is the one that lead to the Alsacian cartographer Waldseemüller to atribute to Vespucci the discovery and the name of the continent. But the whole credit should go to Colombus. Even on his 1499 Vespucci was only a member of the expedition of Alonso de Hojeda (but the power of Italian networking of the time helped him to attribute himself the credit). By 1513 Waldseemüller seem to have realized there was a problem and gave much more credit to Columbus, but by then the damages was made and in 1538 Mercator had already assigned the name America to the northern part of the continent too (so in fact south america was America first). "Today these parts of the earth, Europe, Asia, and Africa, have been completely explored, and a fouth part has been discovered by Amerigo Vespucci, as may be seen in the attached charts. Since Europe and Asia have received the names of women, I see no reason why we should not call this other place Amerige or America, after the wise man who discovered it" - Martin Waldseemüller 1508 "Kenny" wrote in message oups.com... What about 2004 Giro ???? USPS did not participate in the 2004 Giro. The original question asked who all noticed that the USPS/Discovery Channel team won 4 of the last 5 Grand Tours in which they participated. -- Steven L.
