The origin of "grass" is not entirely clear.

Of course, one has to be careful about these things. There is a big
difference between smoking out a grass and smoking grass.

Now, one could get grassed up to the plod for flogging something that
had been half-inched, at which point it would be apposite to leg it
when one is approached by the old bill.
