What did Golay test positive for?
Any of you old timers know? GBMT ---------------------------------------- Pan American Games August 14, 1991 Last year at this time, Jeanne Golay's dreams were shattered and her spirits plummeted to the lowest point in her cycling career. After competing in the United States national championship, Golay tested positive for drugs and was given a six-month suspension. She came back in February, and this afternoon, competing in the Pan American Games, Golay reached the highest ground yet in her comeback by winning a gold medal in the individual road race. The 29-year-old Floridian completed the 63-kilometer course (39 miles) in 1 hour 31 minutes 21 seconds. |

Here's an interesting question: Why was Katrin Tobin relegated from her 3rd place in the 1987 Pan Am games? -ilan |

Anyway, there was a rule disallowing medal sweeps by one nation (USA women finished 1-2-3) so they relegated her to 4th and another nation got the bronze medal. -ilan |

Rebecca Twigg 2. Inga Thompson 3. Katrin Tobin 4. Sara Neil That's what I have, but the 80's stuff is really sketcy, at least what I have. I don't have any info, so I give up, tell us the answer. Tobin rode well that year always in the mix with Bunki Davis, Jeanne Golay and Inga Thompson, taking 2nd and 3rd in a great number of races, but never 1st that I can see. I talked with Peter Nye a while back from the cycling hall of fame. I joked that USAC might have a gold mine of info left over from USCF, which started in one office in New York I think before it moved to Colorado. But Peter joke, oh you think so! Peter once had access to USCF early days stats from races when he wrote his book. He said those years, 70's and 80's were often filed and recorded on little 3 by 5 score cards and filed away in shoe boxes, and not only incomplete, but very hard to look stuff up. He said in those days recording was very poor combined with getting results from races all over the USA. He said you might find yourself quite disappointed once you enter those archives, at least for those years. Velonews archives would be the premiere source, their news and race reports date back to the early 70's. GBMT |

She is still recorded as 3rd! Sara Neil is from Canada, for a minute I was thinking another American took 4th! |
